Climate Change

Typical roles

  • Manager, Team Leader, Advisors
  • Sustainable Transport Officer
  • Climate Change Project Officer
  • Sustainability Advisors

There are three teams in this service:

  • The Climate Change Team – primarily tasked with delivering the adopted Climate Change and Air Quality Strategy, including working with key teams inside the council and with partners
  • The Green Team – tasked with supporting residents to reduce their emissions, save money and energy, and to deliver wider benefits, such as those around delivering benefits for biodiversity.
  • The Transport Team – tasked with delivering the Electric Vehicle Charging Strategy, the roll out of chargers and overseeing the public and community transport services that we support

We have a variety of roles: some are very public facing – for residents and businesses by the Green Team, whose job is to be very visible, undertaking surveys and supporting our communities. There are also those that are more technical in nature, focussed on ensuring we reduce our operational emissions and get value for money in the transport services that we fund.

For all roles, the ability to develop and foster good relations is fundamental, since working with residents and other organisations is key to our success.

There are a range of learning opportunities within the team roles, from courses for how to deliver home energy surveys through to professional qualifications in climate change. These are frequently undertaken within and alongside the day job and are often achieved by learning from others, day courses and wider best practice. Team members frequently attend short courses or conferences to develop their skill set as well as working with officers from other councils and organisations to share their experiences and expertise. Some members of the team have undertaken professional qualifications outside of work to develop their skill set and experience.

The variety and ambition of the council makes this an extremely interesting team to work in. We tend to do things that other councils do not and there is some freedom to undertake our roles in a manner which fosters creativity and allows for exploration of achieving things in the best possible way. A wider supportive team of officers with a can-do attitude means that we have colleagues that are keen to align with our work and to deliver wider benefits.
