My learning and development

Every staff member plays a vital role in helping us to deliver high-quality services for our residents and communities. We take pride in our skilled and diverse workforce and are dedicated to supporting their continuous improvement. As one of the largest local employers, our size and scope provides a wealth of opportunities and career pathways for staff.

Personal and professional development is essential for ongoing growth, which is why we are deeply committed to helping staff at all levels enhance their skills, knowledge, competencies, and talents. Through activities such as on-the-job learning, courses, professional qualifications, and eLearning, we foster career progression. Additionally, we are currently working on providing structured management and leadership development support for those in management roles and those aspiring to lead.

Our learning and development offer has been built by our staff for our staff, and continually draws on what they tell us they need to develop in their roles. It is built around four pillars: statutory and mandatory training, personal and professional development, council essentials, management and leadership essentials.

Statutory and mandatory training

Training required by law or as part of our policies, these are eLearning modules hosted on our learning management system.

Personal and professional development

Support for activities that include growth of skills, knowledge and expertise, including a professional qualification scheme and apprenticeships.

Council essentials

The fundamentals that all staff working at the council would benefit from. Learning opportunities in this area come in a range of forms including in person training sessions, eLearning modules, and external resources.

Management and leadership essentials

These build on council essentials and are designed to support managers and leaders.
